How to Spot Fake, Re-wrapped and Overrated Lithium Cells

A B2B buyer's guide to the four common cell fraud patterns — overstated capacity, re-wrapped used cells, counterfeit branding and mixed batches — and the incoming checks and paperwork that catch them.

Not every cell that arrives in a clean wrap is what the label says. Overstated capacity, re-wrapped used cells, counterfeit branding and quietly mixed batches all circulate in the gray market — and for a B2B buyer they surface as warranty claims and field failures months after payment. This guide covers the four common fraud patterns and the incoming checks and paperwork that catch them.

Why this matters for pack builders and distributors

A single overrated cell in a gadget wastes one consumer’s money. The same cell in a multi-cell pack is a different class of problem:

  • Warranty exposure. Cells are welded into products long before fraud becomes visible. By the time capacity complaints arrive, the batch is in the field and the recall cost dwarfs the cell cost.
  • Field failures. In a series string the weakest cell sets the limit. A re-wrapped B-grade cell with elevated internal resistance sags first, heats most and ages fastest — and drags its neighbors with it.
  • Thermal risk. Used or B-grade cells carry an unknown history: deep discharges, over-temperature, mechanical stress. That history does not show on the wrap, but it raises the odds of a thermal event inside a dense pack.
  • Void paperwork. UN38.3 summaries and safety certificates are issued to a specific manufacturer and model. A counterfeit cell ships with documents that do not legally cover it — a compliance problem at every border.

The four common fraud patterns

1. Overstated capacity

The easiest fraud to catch, because physics does the work for you. Capacity scales with can volume and the state of the chemistry — the highest-capacity 18650 NCM cell in our own catalog is rated 4200 mAh, and the industry’s best mass-produced 18650s sit in the same region. A cell sold as a “9900 mAh 18650” is physically impossible: the can simply cannot hold that much active material. Run the same sanity check on any format before anything else — an outsized rating in a standard can is a sticker, not a specification.

2. Re-wrapped used and B-grade cells

Factory rejects (B-grade) and cells harvested from used packs can be fitted with a fresh PVC sleeve and sold as new A-grade stock. The outside looks perfect; the inside has elevated internal resistance, lost capacity and an unknown history. Tell-tale signs: scratches or corrosion on the can under the wrap, a second wrap layer underneath, date codes that vary within one carton — and measured data that misses the datasheet.

3. Brand counterfeiting

Wraps printed to imitate well-known cell makers, applied to no-name or B-grade cells. Even when the underlying cell happens to work, you lose all traceability, and every certificate referencing the imitated brand is void. For a regulated dangerous good, that alone disqualifies the shipment.

4. Batch mixing

The subtlest pattern: a delivery that blends production dates, grades or even factories. Each cell may individually pass a quick test, but the spread in capacity, internal resistance and open-circuit voltage breaks the matching a multi-cell pack depends on — balancing problems and uneven aging follow.

The incoming inspection a buyer can actually run

None of these checks needs a battery lab. A precision scale, a charge/discharge tester and an AC-IR meter cover all of them. Pull a random sample from across the cartons — not just the top layer.

Watch the spread as closely as the averages: a batch whose IR ranges widely will never balance well in a pack, however good its mean value looks — see internal resistance in the buyer’s glossary.

The paper trail to demand from a supplier

Documents are harder to fake consistently than a wrap. Before ordering, ask for:

  • Certificate of Analysis (CoA) per batch — measured capacity, voltage and IR for the actual production run, not generic typical values.
  • UN38.3 test summary and MSDS for the exact model — explained in shipping documents.
  • Factory traceability — each cell laser-coded, with the code resolving to production line and date.
  • Matched-batch tolerances in writing. Our partner factory matches cells to ≤40 mAh capacity difference, ≤5–10 mV voltage difference and ≤3 mΩ IR difference within a batch, runs 100% voltage and IR inspection before shipment, and ages cells at 45 °C for 6 days plus room-temperature aging before grading — so self-discharge outliers are removed before cells are graded at all.

A counterfeiter can print a convincing sleeve. Faking a coherent set of batch records, per-cell laser codes and test data that all cross-check against each other is far harder — the paperwork, not the wrap, is your strongest defense.

Closing the loop: authorized-channel sourcing

Incoming inspection catches bad cells after they arrive; the cheaper fix is making sure they never enter your chain.
